Engelbert & Elvis Presley

“Walk A Mile In My Shoes” ist einer der bekanntesten Elvis-Songs und könnte nicht besser beschreiben, was viele Künstler dieser Welt fühlen und denken. Denn sein Image und der Mensch an sich sind zweierlei, und es ist verdammt schwer, seinem Image gerecht zu werden, bzw. steckt manchmal auch eine ganz andere Person dahinter, als man öffentlich vielleicht vermuten würde.

Es war mir eine besonders große Ehre vergangene Woche den “King of Romance” Engelbert Humperdinck zu fotografieren. Dieser begann 1967 mit seinem Hit “Release Me” eine Weltkarriere, und stand unter anderem mit Elvis Presley, Olivia Newton John (welche ich ebenfalls vor kurzem fotografiert habe & mehr dazu in einem meiner nächsten Blogbeiträge) , Tom Jones, Dean Martin oder Ende letzten Jahres mit Helene Fischer auf der Bühne.

Mit seinen 84 Jahren ist er unglaublich fit, ein großes Vorbild und spielt gerade eine Tournee mit 23 Konzerten am Stück. Fototechnisch war mir klar, dass ich den “King of Romance” stark, sicher und selbstbewusst zeigen möchte, jedoch auch mit einer gewissen Empfindsamkeit.

I prepared 3 settings, two with a neutral and one with a lively background, and deliberately played with light and shadow.

But before we started, the warm up was as always very important to me and to talk about things with him, which convey security & trust and let him shine. So of course I asked Engelbert what his collaboration with Elvis was like and he answered that he has never met such a sympathetic and human, but also vulnerable artist like him. We also chatted about my home country Austria and much more, so that we almost forgot to take pictures.

Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field...and you can't get that if you don't know the person or make them feel like it's all about the shot. The power of a good portrait lies in the fraction of a second in which you understand something of the life of the person being photographed.

I will definitely never forget the day with the great artist and very special person Engelbert.
